To the distinguished and pleasant Chassid* who fears Hashem, chosen of the people and surpassing it, who seeks the good of his people, who bears generous qualities, who descends from an illustrious family, the Rav Shneur Zalman, may he live long[1],

I greet you and bless you,

I asked my close relative, the Rav, distinguished and pleasant Chassid* who fears Hashem, who devotes himself to communal needs, accomplished in many deeds, Rav A. Z. Slonim[2], to convey my greetings to you, and one may presume that a messenger fulfills the mission entrusted to him[3]. He has no doubt also transmitted to you the newly published book of the Tzemach Tzedek*[4]. Furthermore, I write to you now, after your journey — may it yield long days and good years.

Indeed, the beginning was during the month of the liberation[5], when "the ends of the earth behold the salvation of our Hashem" and "the Name of the Holy One, blessed be He, was sanctified among the nations," according to the words of the Admour HaZaken*, in the letter he wrote regarding his liberation[6]. Each year, and at every period of the year[7], what was accomplished is revealed anew and illuminates the life of whoever walks in the path of Hashem, enlightened by the clarity of those whose liberation we celebrate[8]. How much more is this so for...

As for the halachic* matter you raise[12], the Halacha* clearly establishes that one does not modify...

C) Regarding the construction of this hotel for immigrants: it is true that I had a view on the matter, and I still hold it, as explained in the letter I enclose[16]. But in any case, it is clear that it is yours to make the final decision, since you are the originator of this initiative and it is you who gave it practical effect through your conversation with Mr. D. H. Jordan. Moreover, although the enclosed letter was written several weeks ago, I delayed sending it until I had verified all the details — in particular, I wanted accurate information about immigration from there, the prospects for beginning construction of the second Kfar Chabad*, and the forecasts for its completion. Nevertheless, you already know my opinion in general terms regarding the location for the construction of this hotel. I therefore send you this letter and add that after verifying all these details, my opinion has been strengthened: it is wise to build this hotel as soon as possible, meaning it should be done in the Kfar* that already exists. This is in addition to the reasons stated in the letter I enclose. But I again stress that the final decision is in your hands. In the end, we both seek only the well-being of the immigrants and their families — may Hashem multiply them and may they arrive in joy, with eternal happiness...

באתי בזה גם בכתובים - לאחר שתהי' נסיעת כ' כשורה ובהצלחה בכל הפרטים, הנסיעה הביקורים והחזרה עלי' בעתה ובזמנה לאה"ק ת"ו, מתוך בריאות הנכונה בשמחה ובטוב לבב, וברכת ה' תלוהו בהאמור ובכל עניניו - לאורך ימים ושנים טובות.

והרי התחלתה בחודש הגאולה, גאולה באופן אשר "ראו כל אפסי ארץ ישועת אלקינו" וקידוש "שמו של הקב"ה בין העמים" (לשון רבנו הזקן באגרת ע"ד הגאולה שלו),

והרי בכל שנה ושנה בתקופת השנה חוזרים הענינים ונמשכים ומאירים בחיי כל אחד ואחד ההולך בדרך ה', מוארה באור בעלי הגאולה הנ"ל, ובפרט - המייצג את הרבים ובא בכח רבים, אשר אף שרבים הם גוי אחד בארץ הם.

נ.ב. נצטערתי רבות (א) על השמועה אשר חשד בי כ' שעומד אני לבקר באהקת"ו מבלי להודיעו מקודם. והוא בהיפך מוחלט להיחסים שבינותינו - אילו לא הודעתי לכ'.

ואדרבה, אי ההודעה היא הוכחה שלא הי' להאמור כל יסוד.

(ב) זה עתה הגיעתני שמועה שני', אשר חושש כ' שתוכן הדו"ח של השיחה עם מר ס. שי' ראטבערג ותמיכתו לעניני חב"ד יש לזה איזו שייכות לתמיכה האמורה מאז על ידי הדז'וינט (למפעל בנין המלון בכפר חב"ד בשביל העולים החדשים ממדינתנו לפנים).

שנוסף על הדין הברור שאין משנים מצדקה לצדקה, ונוסף אשר מובן שבענין שכ' השקיע בו עמל

ויגיעה לא הייתי עושה בזה דבר מבלי לברר דעתו מראש, הרי כמדומה שהובלט במכתבי לכ' בדו"ח האמור - שהי' הדיבור עם הנ"ל מפני הענין שמהלכים לו (ס.ר.) בין נדיבי ארצות הברית ואין לזה כל שייכות לדז'וינט. ולא עוד אלא גם כשהזכרתי בהשיחה ע"ד עסקנותו של הנ"ל הוזכר אך ורק ובדיוק - אודות היו-דז'יי-איי והבאנדס.

(ג) בנוגע למקום בנין המלון להעולים הנ"ל: אמת הדבר שהי' לי בזה [-] וגם עתה כן הוא - חוות דעת כמבואר במכתב המצורף בזה . אבל מובן שההחלטה הרי היא ביד כ' - יוזם הרעיון ושגם הביאו לשלב מעשי בדיבורו עם מר ד. ה. דז'ורדאן שי', ולא עוד אלא שלמרות שהמכתב המצורף בזה נכתב לפני כמה וכמה שבועות, הנה עכבתי המשלוח עד שיתבררו עוד פרטים בהאמור (ידיעות ברורות יותר בנוגע העלי' משם, הסיכויים להתחלת בנין כפר חב"ד הב' וההשערה בנוגע לגמרו, וכולי). אבל כיון שכבר הגיעה לכ' השמועה ע"ד חוות דעתי כללית בנוגע למקום בנין המלון, הנני שולח מכתב האמור ובהוספה - שעד כמה שנתבררו הפרטים האמורים הרי זה מחזק עוד יותר דעתי - שכדאי לבנות המלון האמור בהקדם הכי אפשרי, שזאת אומרת - בכפר הקיים כבר, נוסף על הטעמים המבוארים במכתב המצורף. ובהוספה עוד הפעם, שהחלטה הסופית בזה היא ביד כ', שהרי סוף סוף כוונת שנינו היא אך ורק לטובת העולים ומשפחותיהם שיחיו, שכן ירבו בקרוב ממש ויעלו ברינה ושמחת עולם על ראשם.
