Igrot Kodesh · Letter 92 — Torah Publishing Support and the Meaning of Unconditional Love
Volume 1 · Letter 92
To the refined Chassid*, elevated and filled with faith,
Rav Y. Katz [1]
I greet you and bless you,
It is with joy that I acknowledge receipt of your letter of Rosh Chodesh* Menachem Av, to which was enclosed a check of one hundred twelve dollars and fifty cents, intended to finance the edition of the discourses delivered by my father-in-law, the Rebbe Shlita, during Pesach 5703.
The distinguished Chassid, Rav Sh. Palmer [2] has also sent us a check of the same amount and we can now transmit the manuscripts to the printer. As soon as they are printed, we will send you the number of copies that you requested.
In addition to our thanks, we also send you our blessing of Mazel Tov* for having acquired such an important merit, in seeking the good of all, in illuminating souls, with the help of Hashem, through the words of my father-in-law, the Rebbe Shlita, thereby drawing them closer to Torah, to prayer and to good deeds.
There are two categories of people, those who devote themselves to study and those who engage in a professional activity. From various points of view, the latter possess a superiority, first of all because they also study Torah, an obligation that falls upon each person, as established by the Shulchan Aruch*. Moreover, they provide the former with the ability to do so as well. It is precisely for this reason that Zevulun* is mentioned before Yissachar* in the Torah.
But their action is much more important when it is done gratuitously, in a disinterested manner.
This is precisely what loving one's fellow means. One must do good to whoever belongs to the Jewish people, even if one has never seen him, as the Alter Rebbe* emphasizes in the teaching reported on page 28 of the Hayom Yom*. From that point on, any personal interest becomes inconceivable.
What has just been said concerns the Kohanim* [3] in particular. It is said [4] that "He commanded us to bless His people Israel with love." Thus, one who is outside the synagogue can also receive the blessing, even if the Kohen does not know where he is, as the Shulchan Aruch specifies.
It is known that an effort accomplished here below allows one to obtain the heavenly revelation. In this case, it takes the form of a gratuitous Tzedakah*.
Our Sages teach that making efforts to put books at the disposal of others is a form of Tzedakah.
Now, Tzedakah hastens the deliverance. And, concerning exile and deliverance, the verse says: "You were sold for nothing and you shall be redeemed without money."
We must therefore implore a gratuitous benefit from Hashem. The Alter Rebbe emphasizes, in the Tanya*, that such is the attribute of Yaakov. We cannot therefore content ourselves with the promises we have received.
Employing an allegory, our Sages say that Hashem is a Kohen. He will therefore bless His people Israel with peace. This will restore the kingship of the house of David, very soon and in our days, through Moshiach, descendant of David.
With my blessing of immediate Teshuvah, immediate deliverance,
Rav Menachem Schneerson,
Director of the executive committee
