[End of Marcheshvan* 5727]

I reply to the questions you posed to me[1] in your letter, although my time does not permit me to develop the different points at length:

1) It has been said many times that the simplest example illustrating foreknowledge and free will[2] is the following. A man who predicts the future does not contradict the free will of the person concerned by this prediction. More precisely, he has nothing to do with this free will. In another formulation: compulsion contradicts free will, but not[3] foreknowledge.

2) Consequently, one cannot say that it is divine providence or foreknowledge that manifests itself at the very moment of the action.

3) Every detail — including that which concerns the mineral — has its place in the global Divine Plan.[4] This can be justified by means of a simple[3] idea. Thus, the slightest[3] change, in whatever place, will have identifiable consequences throughout the entire world, for its existence constitutes one single entity.

4) According to the Guide for the Perplexed*[5] and all[3] the philosophers of Israel, Divine Providence bears only upon man. Nevertheless, one can see no contradiction in this,[6] for everything that befalls minerals, vegetables and animals also influences man. For all that, the various aspects concerning them are not the object of providence, since man's providence can encompass[3] many[3] events. For Hashem,[3] it matters not therefore which elements will be combined and how the final sum will be obtained — this is quite obvious. A concrete[3] example can be cited: the actuarial basis of insurance companies.[7] This is clear.

Notes

[1] This is a response by the Rabbi, written directly on a letter from Rav Yaakov Immanuel Schochat, dated 11 Cheshvan* 5727. See, regarding him, letter no. 7065. See also the Nelcha BeOrchoteiv*, p. 202.
[2] Hashem's prior knowledge of the decision man will take does not undermine the latter's free will.
[3] The Rabbi underlines the words: "but not," "simple," "slightest," "all," "encompass," "many," "for Hashem" and "concrete."
[4] The Chassidic discourse entitled "Therefore they shall say," from 5696, published in the Sefer HaMaamarim* 5696, p. 120, explains: "The specific movement of a particular creature has an impact on the entire creation in its totality."
[5] See, on this matter, letter no. 94.
[6] With the conception of the Baal Shem Tov* according to which Providence bears equally upon the most insignificant point of creation.
[7] For which it matters only to have the sum to compensate the person who has suffered a loss. It matters not, on the other hand, from whose premiums this sum is constituted.
