To Mr. A. Sheftel,
Mayor of Rishon LeZion,

I greet you and bless you,

It was a pleasant surprise[1] for me to receive your letter of 30 Av and to observe the interest you show in the Yeshiva* Achei Temimim* located in your city, Rishon LeZion*. This adds to information I had obtained indirectly some time ago. Furthermore, I have good hope that your interest will also be expressed in a manner consistent with our Sages'[2] statement that "the act is essential," that is, concretely — in this case through assistance, to the fullest extent possible, to the Yeshiva Achei Temimim, within the framework of our Torah*, Torah of life's institutions located in your city.

Of course, if, wherever the children of Israel reside, at every era, Torah institutions have been the most essential and most fundamental for the existence of our people, how much more so is this the case in our Holy Land, "toward which Hashem's eyes are always turned, from the beginning of the year to the end of the year"[3]. All the more so is this the case in our age of many upheavals, of challenges and confusion of values. The necessity of Torah — from the same root as Hora'ah*[4], instruction — in daily life is then infinitely greater.

By an act of divine Providence, you have received uncommon opportunities and means, enabling you to act directly in your city in the domain just defined. The attribute of good is the broadest[5] and your example will therefore be imitated in other cities, in the settlements of the children of Israel in our Holy Land. In all of this, the merit of the public aids you. Of course, to the fullest extent possible, I take an interest in the situation of our institutions, wherever they may be, and first and foremost those in the Holy Land; but to my great sorrow, our means are wholly insufficient given the needs.

If I trust the wording of your letter, as I have said, it is unnecessary to ask you to continue your assistance and support to the Yeshiva Achei Temimim of your city. I will therefore content myself with thanking you for what you have done until now and with expressing my hope that in the future your action will be even broader, and that you will influence your friends as well as those who listen to you to do likewise. May Hashem grant that you observe the positive fruit of your efforts in this matter and, more generally, in all that concerns your city, which will merit its name, Rishon LeZion*[6], for from it shall go forth Torah and the word of Hashem[7]. With my respects and my blessing that you be inscribed and sealed for a good and sweet year,

ראש-העירי' ראשון לציון

שלום וברכה!

הפתעה נעימה היתה לי קבלת מכתבו מיום ל' באב ולראות התענינותו במצב הישיבה "אחי תמימים" בעירו ראשון לציון, נוסף על השמועות שהגיעוני בזה מן הצד זה מזמן. ובפרט אשר תקותי חזקה שהתענינותו זו מתבטאת, מתאים לאימרת חכמינו ז"ל מעשה הוא העיקר - במעשה בפועל, עזר ככל האפשר לישיבת "אחי תמימים" בתוככי מסגרת מוסדות תורתנו תורת חיים אשר בעירו.

ומובן אשר אם בכל מקום מושב בני ישראל ובכל התקופות - היו מוסדות התורה מהענינים העקריים והחיוניים בחיי עמנו בני ישראל, על אחת כמה וכמה בארצנו הקדושה אשר עיני ה"א בה מראשית השנה ועד אחרית שנה, וביותר בתקופתנו רבת המאורעות והמהפכות וטישטוש הגבולים, שההכרח בתורה - לשון הוראה - בחיי היום-יום גדול פי כמה ועד אין ערוך.

והרי בהשגחה פרטית ניתנו למר אפשרויות ויכולת יוצאות מן הכלל לפעול באופן ישר בעירו בכיוון האמור, ומרובה מדה טובה שממנו יראו וכן יעשו שאר עיירות ומושבות בני ישראל בארצנו הקדושה, וזכות הרבים מסייעת.

מובן שככל האפשרי מתענין אני במצב מוסדותינו בכל מקום שהם,

ומהראשונים - אלו אשר בארץ הקדש, אבל לצערי אין האמצעים מספיקים כלל וכלל את הדרישה.

על פי סגנון מכתבו בודאי, כנ"ל, למותר לבקשו על דבר המשכת העזר והסיוע מצדו לישיבת "אחי תמימים" אשר בעירו, כי אם להודות על העזר בעבר ולהביע תקותי חזקה שעוד יוסיף בזה בעתיד כהנה וכהנה. וגם על חבריו שי' והנשמעים לרצונו - ישפיע בכיוון האמור. ויהי רצון שיראה פרי טוב בעמלו בזה, ובכלל בכל עניני העיר, שתהי' ראוי' לשמה - "ראשון לציון ", אשר ממנה תצא תורה ודבר ה'.
