To Mr. Elisha Cohen,

I greet you and bless you,

I received your letter and your New Year's greetings with particular satisfaction. Furthermore — and this is essential — I have learned of the assistance you extended to the young man, Mr. Michael Vashadski, for the actions he carries out on behalf of Jews and Judaism in his city of Rishon LeZion*. Our Sages say[2] that "the reward of the Mitzvah* is the Mitzvah* itself," which means that there is no reason to thank one who puts it into practice, for this would in no way correspond to what was accomplished, which is the perfection of the recompense. Nevertheless, I wish to express my pleasure and my satisfaction to the fullest degree in learning that Mr. Vashadski found in you a helping hand, a supporting hand in his important and essential action — which is worthy of being encouraged and supported and which has great need of it. For someone such as yourself, it is surely unnecessary to say more.

Furthermore, we find ourselves in days of which the prophet says[3]: "Seek Hashem while He may be found. Call upon Him while He is near" — that is, in the ten days of Teshuvah*[4]. May Hashem therefore grant that you develop these activities in the course of this new year, including those you carry out for kindness and justice in general. You will do so in good health, with joy and enthusiasm. With my respects and my blessing that you be definitively inscribed for a good year,

שלום וברכה!

בקורת [רוח] מיוחדת קבלתי מכתבו ואיחוליו לשנה החדשה, ועוד וגם זה עיקר, פרישת שלום מעזרתו להאברך מר מיכאל שי' ושדסקי בקשר עם פעולותיו למען יהודים ויהדות בעירו ראשון לציון.

ואף ש אמרו חכמינו ז"ל ששכר מצוה מצוה, זאת אומרת שאין מקום להבעת תודה לעושה מצוה שהרי אין זה בערך לפעולה עצמה שהיא תכלית השכר, בכל זה יש מקום להבעת קורת רוח ונחת רוח במדה גדולה להידיעה שמר ושדסקי מצא בכ' יד עזר ויד סמך בפעולתו הנעלית והחשובה, הראוי' וגם זקוקה לעידוד וסיוע ככל האפשר. ובודאי לדכותי' דמר אין צורך להאריך בדבר.

ובפרט אשר נמצאים אנו בימים עליהם אומר הנביא דרשו ה' בהמצאו קראוהו בהיותו קרוב (היינו עשרת ימי תשובה).

ויהי רצון אשר בשנה חדשה זו יוסיף מר בפעולות האמורות, כולל פעולותיו למען הטוב והצדק בכלל, מתוך בריאות ושמחה וטוב לבב.
