I greet you and bless you,

I received with pleasure your letter of 6 Tishri*, in which you inform me of your activities and those of your friends in the domain of Orthodox education for immigrant girls. You also enclose a description of the situation drawn up by Rabbi Yitzchak Lipshitz, of many accomplishments and good conduct.

From the wording of your letter, it is surely unnecessary to explain at length the great importance that attaches to the education of young girls, each of whom is a descendant of Sarah, Rivkah, Rachel, and Leah. This element is essential and fundamental, for I observe that your activity is specifically devoted to the education of girls — which means that you scrupulously maintain, in this matter, the separation between boys and girls[2]. Whoever possesses some knowledge of pedagogy will readily understand the utmost necessity of such separation from the youngest age. For indeed it does not depend on the age at which those being educated become obligated in Mitzvot* — that is, Bar Mitzvah* and Bat Mitzvah* age — but must take place many years before that, for it is then that the habit of the small boy or small girl becomes his or her nature[3] for all the years that follow — this is entirely obvious.

In the domains of good and holiness, we are enjoined to know elevation*[4], all the more so as in this matter a situation, however good it may be at present, can always be elevated and improved, since it draws its source from Hashem, Who has no end and no limit, Who is linked to it. I therefore have good hope that each of you and all of you together will redouble your ardor in this direction, so that your actions may be worthy of the name of your project: "Orthodox educational*[5]" — which means that you will not content yourself with the observance of Mitzvot*, including that of education, in a mechanical manner[6], but will fill yourselves with awe in order to put into practice the Commandments of the Holy One Blessed Be He with alacrity, in the best manner, and with joy[7] — all the more so since education, according to the words of our Sages[8], is a divine mission. With my respects, my blessing to give me good news of all of this, and my wishes that you be definitively sealed for a good year,

שלום וברכה!

בנועם קיבלתי מכתבו מיום ו' בתשרי, בו כותב על דבר פעולות שלו ושל חבריו בשטח חינוך החרדי לבנות עולות – ביחד עם פירוט המצב וכולי על ידי הרב יצחק שי' ליפשיץ, רב פעלים ובעל מדות וכו'.

ועל פי סגנון מכתבו בודאי למותר להאריך בגודל חשיבות הענין של חינוך הבנות, שכל אחת – בת שרה רבקה רחל ולאה. וגם זה עיקר וחשוב שרואני שעבודתם מוקדשת לחינוך הבנות במיוחד, זאת אומרת ששומרים בכל התוקף הדרוש הפרדת בנים ובנות בחינוכם. שכל מי שיודע פרק בחינוך בודאי אינו זקוק להסברה ע"ד חשיבות הכי רצינית בהפרדה האמורה, מתחיל מגיל הכי רך, שהרי אין זה נוגע לחיוב המחונכים והמחונכות במצוות, היינו לעונת הבר מצוה ובת מצוה שלהם, כי אם הרבה הרבה שנים לפני זה אשר הרגל התינוק והתינוקת מאז נעשה טבע לשנים הבאות וכולי וק"ל.

וכיון אשר בעניני טוב וקדושה נצטוינו להעלות בקודש, ובפרט אשר בענינים האלו ככל שיהי' המצב טוב בהוה תמיד יש מקום לעלי' ולהטבה יותר שהרי מקורם ומקושרים הם בהקב"ה שהוא אין-סופי ואין גבולי – התקוה חזקה שכל אחד מהם וכולם יחד יוסיפו חילים בכיוון האמור, שתהיינה הפעולות מתאימות לשם מפעלם "חינוכי- חרדי ", זאת אומרת לא להסתפק בקיום המצוות, כולל מצות החינוך, כמצות אנשים מלומדה, כי אם מתוך החרדה לקיים מצוותיו של הקב"ה בזריזות בהידור ובשמחה, ובפרט מלאכת החינוך אשר כדברי חכמינו ז"ל מלאכת הוי' היא.
