To the great Rav, distinguished and pleasant Chassid*, of many accomplishments, Rav Yechezkel Hartmann[1],

I greet you and bless you,

After an unusually long interruption, I received your letter and its contents with pleasure. I learned that you are well, as are the members of your family, and I took note of your work and activities. Officially, you direct a school of social workers, but I am confident that you do not content yourself with guiding your students to appreciate the value of the spark of Judaism, but that in addition, you ensure that this spark spreads over the entire surface and, above all, that it gives rise to concrete actions in daily life — in accordance with the Halachic* ruling of our Sages[2] that "action is paramount." Moreover, the Rambam*, guide of the perplexed of his generation and of all generations, explained in his commentary to the Mishnah*, tractate Avot*, ch. 3, Mishnah* 15, that "good deeds, when performed many times, constitute a strong acquisition." This statement is cited and commented upon in its own way by the Admor HaZaken* in Iggeret HaKodesh*, ch. 21. To someone such as yourself, who has accumulated long experience in the United States in the education of the children of Israel in general, and of young people in particular, it is surely unnecessary to say more. With my regards and my blessing for success in all of this, wishing you a joyful festival[3] and that this joy extend throughout the entire year,

Of course, I was particularly pleased to see, from your address, that you reside in Bnei Brak*. I am confident that this is a symbol that your true home is Bnei Brak[4] and that you direct your school in that spirit. For "one who desires to purify himself is assisted from Above"[5].

אחרי ההפסק הכי ארוך נעם לי לקבל מכתבו (עם המצורף בו) ולהוודע אשר השלום אתו וב"ב שיחיו, וכן ע"ד עבודתו ופעולותיו. ותקותי חזקה שאף שבאופן רשמי הרי זה בי"ס לעבודה סוציאלית שהוא מנהל, איננו מסתפק בהדרכה שתלמידי ביה"ס יעריכו היטב "הנקודה היהודית", כי אם ועיקר אשר נקודה זו תתפשט על כל השטח כולו ולכל לראש בנוגע למעשים בפועל בחיי היום-יום, שהרי כפסק דין חכמינו ז"ל המעשה הוא העיקר. ולא עוד אלא שביאר הרמב"ם מורה הנבוכים בזמנו וגם נבוכי הדורות, ובלשונו אשר "כפי המעשים הטובים פעמים רבות עם זה יגיע קנין חזק" (פירוש המשניות, אבות פ"ג משנה ט"ו, הובא ונתבאר עפ"י סגנונו על ידי רבנו הזקן באגה"ק סי' כ"א). ובודאי לדכוותי' דמר אשר נסיון רב הי' לו בארצות הברית בהדרכת בנ"י בכלל ובהדרכת הנוער בפרט, האריכות בהאמור אין בה צורך.

בכבוד ובברכה להצלחה בהאמור ובברכת חג שמח ולהמשיך השמחה בכל השנה כולה.

מובן שנעם לי במיוחד לראות מן הכתובת אשר דר הוא בבני ברק, שתקותי חזקה שזהו סמלי לדירתו האמתית שהיא בבני ברק וברוחם ישפיע על המוסד, והבא לטהר הרי מסייעין לו.
