To the great Rav, distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem, dedicates himself to communal needs, of many accomplishments, of favorable character traits, Rav Yehoshua Hutner[1],

I greet you and bless you,

I received the books published by the Israeli Talmud Institute. There was no indication of who had requested that they be sent to me, but I assume this request came from the director. I therefore express to you, through the present letter, my great gratitude and my profound satisfaction at seeing that the publication of the works of the early Sages is being continued. I also thank you for having taken the trouble to send these books to me.

On this occasion, it is both my duty and a pleasure to congratulate you, not only for publishing the writings of the early Sages who are compared to angels[2], but also for having succeeded in giving them a pleasing appearance, in accordance with the injunction of our Sages[3]: "He is my Hashem and I wish to adorn Him[4]: make yourself pleasing before Him with a beautiful Tallit*..." If this has always been so, how much more is it the case in our orphaned generation, which needs a particular encouragement to put into practice the terms of the Mishnah*[5]: "Do not observe the outer appearance" — and one does not always succeed in this[6]! When it comes...

The size of the books must be established accordingly, in light of what has just been said and in order to remove the arguments through which the evil inclination conceals itself, when it advises a man to content himself with the books he already has[7]. Now, the publications of the Institute come in various sizes. It seems this depends on whether the text is presented in two columns or in one. Nevertheless, one has grown accustomed to even an encyclopedia being printed in two columns. For the Decisors, on the other hand — for example, the Piskeï HaRi...[8]...

May this encouragement hasten the publication of the following volumes, to the greatest extent possible. May Hashem grant that your work succeed, in order to magnify the Torah and glorify it.

שלום וברכה!

הנני לאשר בזה קבלת הספרים מהוצאת המכון התלמוד הישראלי, ואף על פי שלא הי' רשום במצות מי נשלחו אבל מניח אני שנשלחו בהוראת המנהל. ולכן הנני מביע בזה תודתי הרבה וסיפוק רוחי שממשיכים להו"ל מתורתם של ראשונים, וגם בעד שימת לבו לשלוח לי הספרים האמורים.

ובהזדמנות זו חובתי הנעימה לומר לו ישר כוחו, שנוסף על עצם הדבר הוצאה לאור תורת ראשונים כמלאכים , עוד זאת שעלה בידו להדפיסם בצורה חיצונית נאה, מתאים לצווי חכמינו ז"ל זה א-לי ואנוהו – התנאה לפניו, טלית נאה וכולי. ואם תמיד הי' כך, על אחת כמה וכמה בדורנו דור יתום שזקוק הוא לזירוז מיוחד לקיים דבר משנה אל תסתכל בקנקן, ולא תמיד מצליחים בזה. והרי יפה שעה אחת קודם להביא עניני תורתנו תורת חיים לכל הזקוקים אלי' ולהמשיכה ולחבבה בכל האופנים האפשריים כנ"ל על ידי דפוס נאה וכו' וכו', ובודאי האריכות למותר.

יורשה לי להעיר עוד על נקודה השייכה להאמור, בנוגע לגודל הספרים, היינו הפורמאַט שלהם, שדורנו הורגל לסטאַנדאַרד בכל הענינים וגם בנוגע לספרים, ובפרט כאלה הזקוקים למדף וארון הבנויים ג"כ באופן סטאַנדאַרדי. שלכן גודל הספרים גם כן צריך להיות מתאים, בהתאם לנקודה האמורה להסיר כל המסוואות של היצר המפתה את האדם שדי ומספיק לו בספרים שיש לו כבר וכו'. והרי בספרי המכון כמה גודלים להם. ואף שכנראה תלוי באם נדפס בשני טורים או בטור אחד, הנה אם בנוגע לאנציקלופדי' וכיו"ב כבר הורגלו שיהי' נדפס בשני טורים, אבל בנוגע לפוסקים, כמו פסקי הרי"ד, אין מנהג קבוע בזה ואדרבה. במילא הרי יכול להיות בגודל שכבר הורגלו לו וגם קל יותר לנטלו ממקום למקום וכולי.

אתאפק לא אוכל מדי פעם בפעם וגם בפעם הזאת לעורר על גודל ההפסק בזמן בין כרך לכרך באנציקלופדי' התלמודית . ואצפה אשר תזכורת זו והתעוררות זו תקדים הופעת הכרכים הבאים בכל האפשר, וחפץ ה' בידם יצליח להגדיל תורה ולהאדירה.
