[Before 18 Menachem Av 5703 [1]]

You will find here the conceptions of Divine Providence developed by the Sages who preceded the Baal Shem Tov*, and then that of the Baal Shem Tov.

1: The conception of the Baal Shem Tov

Divine Providence governs every detail of a person's existence, but also that of minerals, plants, and animals. Several Chassidic texts at my disposal allow me to establish the definition given by Chassidut*.

In 5696 [2], my father-in-law, the Rebbe said: "Our master, the Baal Shem Tov, specifying the meaning of Divine Providence, indicates that not only does the Creator determine the slightest detail of the movement of every creature, thereby bringing it vitality and existence, but moreover, He inscribes this detail in the global schema of creation. Thus, the movement of a blade of grass occupies a place in the Divine Plan of creation."

First remark: The Tanya gives only a general definition of Divine Providence, emphasizing that heretics contest it, considering it impossible, even if they acknowledge that the world was created from nothing by the Word of Hashem. This is what the context allows us to establish. Another text specifies that, according to these heretics, a causal relationship exists between the Divinity and the world. Now, the effect acts back upon its cause and they conclude from this that Hashem cannot invest Himself in these lower worlds to reveal His Providence there. This would be, for Him, a vertiginous fall and, moreover, would call into question His Unity.

They therefore consider that "Hashem has abandoned the earth" and is no more than "the Lord of lords" [3]. For the same reason, they consider that miracles are impossible.

One must therefore respond to them that, on the contrary, it is certain that Hashem is always present within creation, that He is permanently in its lowest stages.

Second remark: Hashem protects with one eye those who fear Him, or else with His two eyes. One can also imagine that one eye accomplishes what His two eyes cannot. Each eye introduces a specific aspect of this Providence, but does not call into question the detail of what constitutes it. Such is the opinion of the Baal Shem Tov, but not of the Sages who preceded him.

For all, a miracle taking a natural aspect is an elevated form of Providence. This is why one eye alone can be turned toward those who fear Him.

Natural behavior is inferior to the Providence of one eye and can be compared to the situation in which He would close His eyes, which Hashem forbid. This is how one must interpret certain passages of Chassidut.

2: The conception of the Sages prior to the Baal Shem Tov

The Providence of Hashem applies individually to men and globally, to the entire species, for animals and plants.

Thus, the Guide for the Perplexed, after presenting various opinions, says:

"The fifth conception is ours, that is to say that of our Torah, according to which Providence is individual only for men, while it bears upon the species as a whole for animals, and a fortiori for plants. But it does not apply to all men in the same manner. For, the senseless and the wicked are contemptible and comparable to animals."

The Shomer Emunim*, a disciple of Rabbi Moshe Zakuto, writes at the end of his book: "Nothing exists by chance, without the intervention of Divine Providence, as it is said 'I will follow them in what happens to them.' Thus, what seems to be chance is, in reality, a divine manifestation, for everything emanates from His Providence. Nevertheless, differences exist between the forms of this Providence, as the Sages of the Kabbalah* explain. And the creatures that have no accomplishments, that is to say animals, plants, and minerals, benefit from this Providence through the intermediary of the stars assigned to them, which watch over their species as a whole.

In contrast, Hashem does not specify His Providence to the point where it could determine whether a particular ox should live or die. Providence cannot take into account such details regarding animals and, a fortiori, plants and minerals. Indeed, it is only their species as a whole that occupies a place in creation. Providence therefore cannot apply specifically to each being.

One can conclude from this that chance decides what happens to each being within a species. All of this is not decided by Hashem, unless something resulting from it concerns the protection of man. Thus, Hashem does not decide that a particular fish must die and another must live. He decides, on the other hand, that a particular man must find something to eat. Similarly, the Providence over man also decides what will happen to his animals, for example whether his ox should grow fat, whether his jug should break."

The example of fish given here is taken up by the Tanya: "If a man, endowed with free will, curses him, that person will be punished for having made bad use of his free will. Despite this, the one who suffers the affront must know that it has already been decided Above and that Hashem has many means of accomplishing what He desires."

The Sefer Elima Rabbati*, of Rabbi Moshe Cordovero*, says: "A believer must not imagine that any action, important or negligible, could be the result of chance, which Hashem forbid. All of this comes from Divine Providence and in no way from the intermediate levels that are the angels, the celestial thrones, or the Sefirot*, which Hashem forbid. Hashem decides all of this."

Then, he details the different aspects of Divine Providence, as does the Shomer Emunim, previously cited.

There is therefore a contradiction between the beginning of the words of Rabbi Moshe Cordovero and of the Shomer Emunim, affirming that nothing is the result of chance, and their conclusion, according to which the details concerning the animal kingdom are left to chance.

Nevertheless, one can resolve this difficulty based on the statement of the Shomer Emunim, according to which chance is also of divine origin, for everything comes from Him.

The Rambam* also says: "Know that Hashem does everything as He sees fit, even though we are masters of our actions. How is this so? Just as the Creator willed that, by nature, fire and air rise upward, He also desired that man have free will and be master of his actions."

The Tosafot* also say: "This does not depend on Hashem, for He does not wish to modify the circumvolution of the stars."

* * *

One must know that, according to these opinions, there is no Divine Providence for animals, plants, and minerals. Nevertheless, Hashem has full knowledge of the slightest detail of what happens in creation.

Thus, the Ikkarim* says: "Hashem necessarily has knowledge of what exists and what is done in the world. The slightest detail, small or great, is known to Him. But He does not accord His Providence to it. These creatures will therefore not be rewarded or punished for their actions.

However, Hashem is aware of what happens to them, since these beings are an integral part of the entirety of creation and belong to a particular species."

* * *

One cannot ask, according to this conception, whether there exists a detail relating to animals, plants, or minerals that has no bearing on man, although everything exists for him, as the Rambam says in the introduction to his commentary on the Mishnah.

Indeed, according to this opinion and, in my humble opinion, according to that of the Baal Shem Tov as well, while it is true that the entire world was created for man, this statement must be understood only for animals, plants, and minerals considered as a whole, as well as for events in their totality. But one cannot think that the fall of a specific leaf into the sea, for example, concerns a particular man.

The Rambam, in his introduction to the commentary on the Mishnah, cites the statement of Ben Zoma, according to which: "Blessed is He who created all this to serve me." This does not mean that each thing was specifically created for Ben Zoma. Similarly, the Likkutei Torah* distinguishes an essential aspect and an accessory one in the creation of animals.

3.

Some clarifications must be given on the conceptions of the Sages prior to the Baal Shem Tov:

A) Does Providence for men also apply to the wicked, to non-Jews, to the senseless, or only to virtuous Jews?

The Guide for the Perplexed, previously cited, considers that it does not concern the senseless and the wicked for, according to him, Providence requires intellectual adherence.

One can conclude, according to his opinion, that the withdrawal of Providence from the wicked person is not a punishment or a provoked phenomenon, but indeed a natural situation.

The Ramban* seems to be of the same opinion, who says: "His Providence, in this lower world, bears upon global situations. It also concerns men, until they give up their soul. But Hashem endeavors to protect more particularly those who are faithful to Him."

The Derech Chaim* says: "The opinion of the Rambam is challenged based on the verses 'Your eyes are attentive to everything that happens to men' and 'He creates their heart together.' Concerning the actions of the wicked, it is said 'Can a man hide from Me?', even when he is seized by a spirit of folly and becomes like an animal. In fact, He accords His Providence to the righteous with kindness and to the wicked with severity."

One can question this interpretation. How can one find it in the words of the Guide for the Perplexed?

The Kehillat Yaakov, in the article "Providence," which cites the opinion of the Ramban and that of the Bechaye, distinguishes two forms of Providence: that which observes, applying to all beings and always identical, including among non-Jews, and that which protects, concerning only the righteous.

According to the Elima and the Shomer Emunim, Hashem removes His Providence from the wicked. Then, it is indeed a provoked event and not a natural one. One can question this. Does it not say there that "the Providence of Hashem concerns man in the slightest detail" and then "the tenth form of Providence is that which intervenes when Hashem veils His face. He thus abandons the one who has committed a sin to the laws of nature. The image of the spring will help understand this. The one who does not wish to make the effort to climb to where it is found will have to drink the dirty waters that are carried downstream by the river."

B) Are animals and plants excluded from Divine Providence, or does a star designated for the entire species also protect them?

For the Guide for the Perplexed, the Elima, the Shomer Emunim, it is clear that the details concerning animals, plants, and minerals are purely the result of chance, that Hashem does not concern Himself with them.

But the Kehillat Yaakov questions the opinion of the Ramban, based on a passage from the Yerushalmi* according to which Rabbi Shimon Bar Yochai said: "A bird could not be caught without the intervention of Hashem. How much more is this the case concerning men."

Remark: One can ask why Rabbi Shimon had to observe a bird to deduce that men benefit from Divine Providence, when so many verses allow this to be established. In fact, he emphasizes here that Providence is maintained even in a case of danger. Then, if the bird is not certain to be captured, how much more is this the case for man.

Certainly, it is said that one does not have the right to expose oneself to danger, but perhaps this refers to one who has no other option. Rabbi Shimon, for example, was in the cave and he could not know when the decree would be annulled and the danger removed, to the point that the skin of his body became covered with sores. This is in no way comparable to suddenly falling into a trap.

And one cannot think, as the Radal advances, that even if Providence does not concern animals, this case is particular since the hunter can only appropriate the bird in this manner. Indeed, why should he kill this specific bird rather than another, as the Elima and the Shomer Emunim point out? Moreover, why does Rabbi Shimon deduce the situation of man by considering that of the bird, rather than taking into account the material sustenance of the hunter?

The explanation therefore involves the star that is at the origin of the details concerning animals. For now, I have not seen anyone else who develops the same opinion.

C) According to the Sages of the Kabbalah previously cited, taking into account the fact that some reincarnate into animals, plants, or minerals, one must conclude that Divine Providence also exists for these categories.

4: Are there researchers and Sages of Israel, prior to the Baal Shem Tov, who consider that Divine Providence also applies to minerals, plants, and animals?

The Chinuch* writes: "Some consider that Divine Providence applies to everything that happens in the world. Thus, a leaf does not fall from a tree except by the decision of Hashem. Reason does not easily accommodate such a conception. Others, impious people, consider that Hashem does not accord His Providence to the world at all. Those who have true faith think that Hashem watches over animal species in their totality. This is what the Great Ones of our people affirm."

Thus, in his time, no one among those who have true faith, that is to say children of Israel, adopted the first conception he mentions.

The Shomer Emunim, previously cited, explains Divine Providence also according to the opinion of the Sages of the Kabbalah and one can conclude that they themselves do not adopt this conception.

* * *

Some did not address this question, did not consider that there was matter for research on this subject. Based on the simple meaning of the verses, they therefore considered that Divine Providence also applied to minerals, plants, and animals. One cannot, however, count them among the various conceptions mentioned here, even if, after the revelation of the teaching of the Baal Shem Tov, it turned out that they were right.

An example will prove this. The Rambam says that: "A sin is committed inadvertently only if it is based on the opinion of a sage or a disciple capable of teaching who made an error. In contrast, if he was ignorant (regarding the question submitted to him, even if he is erudite in other areas), one is acquitted regarding this sin, for his knowledge of the prohibition is not a certainty and he himself acted inadvertently, just as those who came to consult him."

What has just been said is evidently different from the following passage of the Tanya: "All Jews have faith... a pure faith."

* * *

The fourth conception of Providence mentioned by the Guide for the Perplexed is the following. It concerns everything that exists, including minerals, plants, and animals. It follows that, in the World to Come, animals will receive a reward because they suffered or died in this world.

He concludes: "Our faith (perhaps one should say our people) has never retained this notion of reward for animals. The Sages of the Talmud make no mention of it at all. But some among the later Geonim* learned of it through the philosophers and accepted it." The Rambam, on the other hand, rejects this conception.

Is this the conception of the Baal Shem Tov, when it results in a reward that animals would receive in the World to Come? Chassidut establishes that only men, endowed with free will, will be rewarded.

Even if one defines the reward spoken of by the Guide for the Perplexed as compensation for sufferings endured in this world, why not say the same for plants and minerals, if they are cut or destroyed before their time? And one is capable of determining this time, since there is a prohibition against damaging and wasting them. In such a case, is there not suffering and death for the soul of the plant or mineral? And the Likkutei Torah speaks only of liberating the spark of holiness imprisoned in the material object, but not of attributing a reward to it.

Certainly, this explanation of the Likkutei Torah allows one to understand why a particular animal must die. But this does not mean that it receives, in addition, a reward. One must therefore question this.

5: If creation is renewed at every instant, as the Baal Shem Tov deduces from the verse "Hashem, Your Word stands forever in the heavens," it follows that Divine Providence indeed concerns every being.

One must conclude from this that those who deny the application of Divine Providence to minerals, plants, and animals also do not accept the idea of creation being renewed at every instant.

Those who interpret the Tzimtzum* literally [4] will undoubtedly reject the idea of a renewal at every instant of creation and of a Creative Force permanently animating matter. Conversely, there are different ways to establish that those who do not recognize the existence of Divine Providence for minerals, plants, and animals think, despite this, that creation is renewed at every instant. And the Shomer Emunim, who is one of them, considers moreover that the Tzimtzum should not be interpreted literally.

Nevertheless, nothing requires us to say that the sages previously cited reject the analysis of the Baal Shem Tov showing the permanent Presence of Hashem within creation, even if they do not say it clearly in their books. One can prove it in the following manner:

A) Those who deny the application of Divine Providence to minerals, plants, and animals nevertheless acknowledge that He has knowledge of the slightest event involving them. This is what the Ikkarim, previously cited, establishes. Therefore, why not say the same about the Creative Force that is within matter?

B) The permanent presence of the Word of Hashem in creation has the effect of renewing it at every instant. But all agree that at the first instant, the Word of creation was pronounced by Hashem, just as He breathes a soul into the newborn child. According to the Rambam, however, the animal that is born receives a soul by an effect of chance and not by Divine Providence.

C) The permanent presence of the Word of Hashem in creation does not contravene the free will granted to man. Indeed, the Creator willed to have man's choice intervene in this matter. Similarly, one can consider that the vitality of minerals, plants, and animals was transmitted to the stars responsible for the different species.

Obviously, this does not mean that these stars have free will, or that their intervention is a natural phenomenon or the result of chance. Indeed, the permanent presence of the Word of Hashem eliminates the difference between all these situations.

D) Chassidut allows one to establish clearly that creation and Divine Providence are two different levels. Providence presupposes an evolution. It justifies reward and punishment, confers knowledge of what has already happened. Creation and existence, on the other hand, imply an appearance from nothing, which only Hashem can accomplish. The perpetuation of the existent comes from the Light that surrounds the worlds, but is revealed here below thanks to that which penetrates the worlds. The Pelach HaRimon* also specifies the difference between creation and Providence.

The Rebbe Rashab* explained in 5663 [5] that the Providence over a creature is at the origin of its existence. He refers to chapter 48 of the Tanya, although that chapter speaks only of knowledge. But other texts establish a link between Providence and knowledge. Indeed, one distinguishes general vitality from specific vitality, the Light that surrounds the worlds from the Light that penetrates them. Similarly, there is a general Providence, in relation to which all creatures are identical, and another that highlights the superiority of Israel over the nations. It is appropriate to deepen this analysis.

* * *

* * *
