To the attention of the distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem, chosen of the people, who surpasses it, seeks the good of his people, has generous conduct, and is descended from an illustrious family,
Rav Shneur Zalman[1] Shlita*,
I greet you and bless you,
You have surely received my letter concerning your birthday[2]. I am surprised not to have received correspondence from you for a relatively long period, even though, of course, I ask after your wellbeing and receive news of you through the Chassidim*.
We have just experienced the day of good tidings and liberation[3] of 19 Kislev*. We are now on the eve of Chanukah*. May Hashem therefore cause you to advance, add, and illuminate in all that concerns you, within all of Jewry. This light will emanate from pure oil, illuminating the home of every Jew, "at the door of his house, toward the exterior,"[4] according to the teaching that "the night will illuminate like the day,"[5] as explained in Likutei Torah*, Parshat Bamidbar*, p. 8a. With my respects, esteem, and blessing for a luminous and joyous Chanukah*,

בודאי קבל מכתבי בקשר עם יום הולדתו. ולפלא שזה זמן ארוך לפי ערך שלא קבלתי מכ' מכתב, אף על פי שכמובן שאני שואל אודותיו ומקבל פ"ש על ידי אנ"ש שיחיו.
ויהי רצון אשר בבואנו מיום בשורה וגאולה די"ט כסלו ובעמדנו ערב ימי חנוכה, יהי' בכל עניניו בתוככי כל אחד ואחד מישראל, באופן דהולך ומוסיף באור, אור הבא משמן טהור, המאיר בביתו של כל אחד מישראל ובאופן של "על פתח ביתו מבחוץ", זאת אומרת שמאיר גם את החוץ, ולא עוד אלא כהוראת חכמינו ז"ל אשר הדלקת נרות חנוכה זמנה משתשקע החמה, שמאירים את חשכת הלילה אשר בחוץ, ובאופן דמוסיף והולך מיום ליום, ועד אשר סו"ס יקויים היעוד הנבואי אשר לילה כיום יאיר (כמשנ"ת בלקו"ת במדבר ח, א).
