I greet and bless you,

I received in due time your letter of January 7[1] and, although I do not have funds for such projects, as an exception — since you yourself addressed me as an exception — I asked my secretariat to accede to your request, to the greatest possible extent. I hope you have already received the requested materials. On this occasion, I have a pleasant duty to express my gratitude for the medical treatment you provided to Mr. D. C. and, above all, for the attention and kindness you and your team showed to him. It is surely unnecessary to point out to you the importance, for a patient, of benefiting from the physician's benevolence[2], and, even if the reward of the Mitzvah* is the Mitzvah* itself[3] — in this case the satisfaction of the physician who has fulfilled his obligation in healing the sick — it is nonetheless my duty and a Mitzvah* incumbent upon me to express my satisfaction at the news I received on this matter.

We live in a world where many people must have recourse to medicine in general, and to your specialty in particular, ophthalmology. May Hashem therefore grant that you succeed in healing the sick and that their healing be complete, that you also use your influence to open the eyes that are blind to the light of the Torah* and to the luminary it contains, so that they may see how beneficial this light is. In this way, each and every one of them and of us will realize in his life, including in these dark days, according to the wording of the prophet (Isaiah 40, 26): "Lift your eyes to the heights and see Who created all of this." The verses then say: "Why do you speak, Yaakov, and argue, Israel? My way is hidden from Hashem, but those who place their hope in the Eternal will renew their strength and they will have wings like eagles"[4]. Indeed, those who reside in our Holy Land, "the land toward which the eyes of Hashem your Hashem are always turned, from the beginning of the year to the end of the year"[5], were able to observe all of this with their own eyes of flesh, during the past months.

בעתו נתקבל מכתבו מה7- ליאַנואַר, ואף על פי שאין תחת ידי קרנות למטרות אלו, אבל באופן יוצא מן הכלל, כיון שגם כ' פנה אלי באופן יוצא מן הכלל, מסרתי למזכירות שלי למלא מבוקשתו ככל האפשר ותקותי שכבר קבל החומרים שבקש.

בהזדמנות זו חובתי נעימה להביע לו תודתי על הטיפול רפואי שהושיט למר ד.ש. ועוד ועיקר בעד השימת לב והסברת פנים מצד כ' ועוזריו. ובודאי למותר להדגיש גודל החשיבות אצל החולה סבר פנים יפות של הרופא. ואף ששכר מצוה מצוה, סיפוק הרופא שמילא חובתו לרפא חולים וכולי, הרי גם חובתי ומצוה המוטלת עלי להביע נחת רוח שלי מהידיעות שקבלתי בזה.

ויהי רצון אשר כיון שחיים אנו בתקופה שלעת עתה נמצאים כמה וכמה הזקוקים לרפואה בכלל, ובפרט בשטח שהתמחה בו כ' – רפואת עיניים, שיצליח לרפאות חולים ועד לרפואתם שלימה. וכן יהי רצון שינצל השפעתו גם לפקוח עיניים עיוורות בנוגע לאור התורה ומאור שבה, לראות האור הזה כי טוב, שכל אחד ואחת מהם ומאתנו יגשם בחייו וגם בימים האפורים – בסגנון הנביא – שאו מרום עיניכם וראו מי ברא אלה (ישעי' מ, כו), ובהמשך הכתובים שם – למה תאמר יעקב ותדבר ישראל נסתרה דרכי מה' גו' וקווי ה' יחליפו כח יעלו אבר כנשרים גו'. והרי תושבי ארצנו הקדושה, ארץ אשר עיני ה"א בה מראשית השנה ועד אחרית שנה, ראו זה גם בעיני בשר בחדשים שעברו.
