By the grace of Hashem,

I greet you and bless you,
After a long interruption,[1] I have duly received your letter and your request for a blessing will be read near the tomb of my father-in-law, the Rebbe*, whose merit will protect us. May Hashem cause you to give me good news of this, as well as of your personal situation. Of course, I am saddened that you tell me nothing of your engagement. It would seem that the reason for this silence is the fact that nothing has changed in this domain. Yet, the assurance was given[2] that "if you make efforts, you will succeed." But for this, a genuine effort is required — the search for a suitable match.
I have already written about this several times and therefore do not wish to repeat myself. I will therefore mention only the teaching of our Sages[3] according to which the groom is the one who experiences the fall.[4] In other words, he should not fear such an eventuality, provided that what is essential is preserved, namely Judaism*, fear of Hashem and fine conduct.

אחרי הפסק ארוך קבלתי מכתבו, והפדיון יקרא על ציון כ"ק מו"ח אדמו"ר זצוקללה"ה נבג"מ זי"ע. יתן השי"ת שיבשר בשורות טובות בזה ובמצבו האישי.
מובן מעצמו שהנני בצער על שלא הזכיר דבר ע"ד שידוך. וכנראה שסיבת השתיקה היא משום שאין שינוי בדבר. והרי ישנה ההבטחה יגעת ומצאת, אך צריכה להיות יגיעה אמתית בחיפוש שידוך מתאים.
היות שכבר כתבתי פעמים רבות בנידון, אין רצוני לחזור על עצמי, רק להזכיר את מאמר רז"ל חתן – חות דרגא. במלים אחרות, החתן אינו צריך לפחד מ"חות דרגא" ובלבד שהעיקר – זאת אומרת יהדות, יראת שמים ומדות טובות – יהי' כדבעי.
