Igrot Kodesh · Letter 95 — Tanya and the Soul of Non-Jews — Reconciling Chassidus with Halachah
Volume 1 · Letter 95
By the grace of Hashem,
Monday, 29 Menachem Av 5703,
To the distinguished young men, passionately devoted to the study of the legislative part of the Torah and of Chassidut, seeking elevation, the students of the Yeshivah*, may Hashem grant them long life, Farrandale, New York,
I greet you and bless you,
I have received your letter in which you ask me about the end of the first chapter of the Tanya, which explains that the souls of the other nations emanate from the three forces of evil, totally impure, in which there is no good at all. You wonder, nevertheless, whether these nations do not possess at least a little good. Indeed, how could it be otherwise, since they are asked to put into practice the seven Commandments of the descendants of Noach*.
Moreover, there exist righteous people of the nations, who have a share in the World to Come, according to the opinion of Rabbi Yehoshua, and the Rambam retains this principle for the Halachah*. Or perhaps one must maintain, as the Tanya says, that the other nations have no good at all.
If the analysis is based on logic, one can construct different reasonings. Thus:
A) If one advances that non-Jews actually possess a little good that acts in their personality, what difference must one make between the forces of evil that are totally impure and the one that possesses a little good? And why say that a good deed done by a non-Jew has no other motivation than to boast of it? Moreover, the tractate Sanhedrin considers that a non-Jew must also give Tzedakah. How then can one say that he possesses no good at all?
B) If non-Jews have no good at all, how can they exist? And even if they act to boast, they have nonetheless accomplished a good deed by giving Tzedakah, albeit with a bad intention. Now, how are they capable of a good deed if they possess no good at all?
In fact, Chassidut provides the explanation of all this. The Tzemach Tzedek writes: "The three forces of evil are, by themselves, totally impure and possess no good, but they can contain sparks of holiness that are found exiled within them."
A discourse of 5670 [1] specifies: "The Tanya says that the three totally impure forces of evil have no good at all. This does not mean that they do not contain a spark of holiness. If that were the case, they could not exist. Certainly, they draw their vitality from a force that merely surrounds them. Nevertheless, they must indeed possess the light of holiness. However, the spark they possess has distanced itself from its source and has become obscured to the point of taking the appearance of evil. This is why they do not feel the Divinity at all."
A text of 5665 [2] adds: "The good becomes evil, like a piece of permitted meat which, integrating into that which is forbidden, identifies with it" [3].
(...) One can indeed be surrounded by divine vitality without being aware of it. Conversely, this vitality can be engulfed in the personality of man.
All of this could be developed further, but I wish to answer you as quickly as possible and not delay my letter.
I wish you great success in study and in action.
With my blessing of immediate Teshuvah, immediate deliverance,
The director of the executive committee [4]
