Igrot Kodesh · Letter 951 — Faith & Bitachon

Volume 4 · Letter 187 · To: grand Rav

By the grace of Hashem,
12 Adar Sheni 5711,
Brooklyn,

To the great Rav, distinguished chassid* who has yiras Shamayim*, descendant of an illustrious lineage, Rav Ephraim Eliezer HaKohen[1],

Greetings and blessings,

I received[2] your letter with pleasure and satisfaction. You should consult Likkutei Torah at the beginning of Parshas Shemini. You inform me that the rabbinical committee, an emanation of the city's directing committee, has appointed you Rav and av beis din*.

May Hashem grant that you assume these functions with success, that within the beis din*, which evokes severity, you should be the merciful av*[3], according to Likkutei Torah, in the commentaries on Rosh Hashanah, in the maamar* entitled "Shir HaMaalos." You will also be the rosh*, head, of this beis din*, an anagram of osher*, happiness, as stated at the beginning of Likkutei Torah. You should also consult the Kehilas Yaakov, at the beginning of chapter 103. This osher* and pleasure will be yours just as much as that of the persons whom you will lead.

Due to the preparations for Purim, time does not allow me to respond to your letters as would be fitting. In exchange, I enclose the kuntres* edited on the occasion of this festival and a copy of the collective letter that accompanies it. The latter will replace my reply, which, I hope, will reach you in the coming days.

I conclude as I began, with my wishes for success on the occasion of your appointment and wishing you all good.

I return to you, with many thanks, the letter that my father-in-law, the Rebbe, wrote to you on 28 Adar 5702[4]. This is why I am sending you the present letter by registered mail.

Note: Rosh*, head, and av*, father, are, a priori, synonyms[5]. At the end of Tractate Horayos, only the term av* is cited. Perhaps the abbreviation reish-aleph-beis-daled means rosh avos batei dinim, dean of the heads of rabbinical courts. It is difficult to assert this.

In any case, for what is the subject of our discussion, these expressions all have the same meaning. You will therefore know success in your functions. You will be the rosh*, leading all the limbs, coordinating them so that each one fully assumes its function.

The Otzar Yisrael speaks of av beis din*, rosh av beis din*, Rabbeinu av beis din*. The dictionary of abbreviations of Perlman also says rosh beis din*, but this interpretation is also difficult to accept.

Notes
[1] Rav E. E. Yolles, of Philadelphia. See letter no. 906 regarding him.
[2] The Rebbe uses a Yiddish term that can be translated both as "your letter has reached me" and "your letter has touched me."
[3] In Hebrew, av, the term that designates the president of this court.
[4] 1942.
[5] To designate the president of the rabbinical court.
