To the members of the board of directors(1) of the Tzemach Tzedek* synagogue(2), in the old city of the holy city of Jerusalem, may it be restored and rebuilt by our righteous Mashiach*, may Hashem grant you long life,

I greet and bless you,

A) Following up on my previous letter(3) — which you surely received in its time, although you did not acknowledge receipt, which is surprising — I received, in the days following its dispatch, your letter of 22 Sivan*, and then those that came after it. You inform me of your decision regarding the signing of checks, the secretariat, and the management of accounts. Nevertheless, here again, you make no reference to concrete action.

B) An insistent intervention has reached us here on behalf of Mr. G., who visited the synagogue while he was in the Holy Land, may it be restored and rebuilt, in recent weeks. As he customarily does, he prefers to make such visits unannounced. He therefore did not meet any of the synagogue's leadership or its regular attendees. On the other hand, he saw and "witnessed with his own eyes that nothing had been done to restore the building since his last visit a few months ago." He subsequently visited our friend(4), and in his presence expressed his deep surprise about this. He also protested against such a situation, and the mayor joined him. He even more clearly accepts the transfer of the sum he had donated.

It goes without saying that, given the nature of each donor — especially when it involves a significant sum — it is impossible to argue with him or to explain oneself, all the more so since he claims to have personally seen and verified all of this. Moreover, this is always the way he proceeds with the institutions to which he directs his donations.

My purpose is not to cause you pain, but, insofar as concrete action is concerned, I wish to emphasize that one cannot change the designation of a Tzedakah*(5), that one cannot build and modify the synagogue, and that the sum he gave will therefore be returned to him in any case, since it was specifically intended for that purpose. However, this changes the way Mr. G. regards other institutions — both here and in the Holy Land, may it be restored and rebuilt. The same applies to the dental clinic, not to mention the influence he exercises over our friend(4).

I delayed sending this letter for several weeks(6), in the hope that something concrete(6) would finally happen. It seems I have not yet merited receiving good news in this matter. With my respects and my blessing, and to give me good news,

בהמשך למכתבי הקודם שבודאי נתקבל בעתו, אף כי לפלא שע"ע לא נתאשר, הנה במשך הימים מעת שילוחו נתקבל מכתבם מכ"ב סיון ושלאחריו, בו כותבים ע"ד ההחלטה בנוגע לחתימת הצ'קים וגזברות וניהול החשבונות, אף כי גם בו אין ידיעה ע"ד מעשה בפועל.

ב) היתה כאן פני' ובתוקף וכו' ממר ג. שי' אשר ביקר בביהכ"נ בזמן שהותו באה"ק ת"ו בשבועות האחרונים. כדרכו בכל מקום – מעדיף הוא לעשות ביקורים כאלה מבלי להודיע מראש, אשר לכן לא פגש שם מישהו מהנהלת ביהכ"נ, אנשי ביהכ"נ וכו', אבל ראה "ונוכח בעיניו שלא ניתוסף כלום בתיקון הבנין מאת ביקורו האחרון שם לפני כו"כ חדשים". ובביקורו לאחרי זה אצל ידידנו שי' הביע גם בפניו תמיהתו הכי גדולה על זה, וגם מחאתו על ההנהגה האמורה, ונתרשם שידידנו הזדה[ה] עמו בזה, וגם ראש העירי' נצטרף אליו, וגם הוא מסכים ועוד יותר וכו' שימסרו הסכום שתרם וכולי.

בודאי למותר להוסיף אשר כטבע כל מנדב, ובפרט סכום חשוב, הרי אי אפשר להכנס עמו בויכוחים ושקו"ט, ובפרט כשאומר שהוא עצמו ראה ובדק וכו', שאגב זהו דרכו במוסדות שלטובתם [תורם].

אין כוונתי בזה לצער אותם, אבל כיון שזה נוגע לפועל, באתי להעיר שאף שבהנוגע לסכום שתרם, מכיון שאין משנים מצדקה לצדקה ואין בונים ומתקנים ביהכ"נ, הרי בלאו הכי יחזירו לו את הסכום שתרם דוקא למטרה זו, הרי זה משפיע על יחס מר ג. שי' לשאר המוסדות כאן ובאה"ק ת"ו, וכן בהנוגע להקליניק לשִנַיִם, נוסף על ההשפעה על ידידנו וכו' וכו'.

עכבתי המשלוח לכמה שבועות בצפי' אולי סו"ס יהי' משהו בפו"מ – וכנראה עדיין לא זכיתי לבשו"ט בכיו"ב.
