By the grace of Hashem,
Eve of Rosh Chodesh* Elul* 5728,
Brooklyn, New York,
I greet and bless you,
I have duly received your letter and may Hashem positively fulfill the desires of your heart in all the matters you mention, especially as we are entering the month of Elul*(1), the month of mercy(2), whose theme is defined by the well-known image expressed by the Admour HaZaken* — author of the Shulchan Aruch* and of the Tanya* — in the Likutei Torah*, in Parshat Re'eh*, page 32:
"This evokes the image of a king who, before entering the city, is received by its inhabitants. These men go out to meet him in the field and, from that moment, whoever desires is permitted to present himself before him. He receives each one graciously and displays a smiling face toward all." Such is the content of this month of Elul*. The King is then "in the field," and the thirteen Attributes of Divine mercy are revealed.
May Hashem therefore grant that each of us make use of these favorable days to draw closer to our Father Who is in the heavens, by intensifying what pertains to Torah* and Mitzvot* practiced in the best way possible. Hashem will receive graciously, and with a smile, the prayers and requests of each one among us, within all of Israel, for good and for blessing. הנני לאשר קבלת מכתבו, והשם יתברך ימלא משאלות לבבו לטובה בכל הענינים שכותב.
בפרט שנכנסים אנו לחודש אלול, חודש הרחמים, אשר ענינו מבואר במשל הידוע של כ"ק רבינו הזקן בעל התניא והשלחן ערוך (לקו"ת, פ' ראה, דף לב):
משל למלך שקודם בואו לעיר יוצאין אנשי העיר לקראתו ומקבלין פניו בשדה ואז רשאין כל מי שרוצה להקביל פניו והוא מקבל את כולם בסבר פנים יפות ומראה פנים שוחקות לכולם כו'.
וזהו ענין חודש אלול, שאז הוא בבחינת "מלך בשדה", זמן התגלות י"ג מדות הרחמים.
ויהי רצון אשר כל אחד מאתנו ינצל ימי סגולה אלה להתקרב לאבינו מלכנו על ידי הוספה בעניני תורה ומצוה בהידור, והשם יתברך יקבל בסבר פנים יפות ושוחקות תפילות ובקשות כל אחו"א מאתנו בתוככי כלל ישראל לטובה ולברכה.
