Igrot Kodesh · Letter 956 — Faith & Bitachon
Volume 4 · Letter 192 · [24 Adar Cheni 5711]
[24 Adar Sheni 5711]
I received in their time your two letters, the first which was undated and the second of 22 Adar. But due to my many occupations, I unfortunately was unable to respond until now.
Enclosed you will find the kuntres* edited on the occasion of Purim and that of 2 Nissan. And I now respond to your letters.
I was particularly satisfied to read that you make use of your gifts as a painter. You are preparing an exhibition and the articles published in the press are positive. You will surely progress in this area, and you will use the talents that Hashem has granted you to strengthen Yiddishkeit* and yiras Shamayim*.
The essential point of your letter is the negative appraisal you have of your own situation. You are discouraged and sometimes you even reach the point of giving up. You have difficulty finding your place. You therefore wish to see me, so that we can speak about it face to face.
It is fitting that two good friends meet. A moral encouragement can result for one and the other. But what to do until this meeting? Remain in this situation of giving up, chas v'shalom*? Which of us can permit himself such a thing?
You do not tell me what is the cause of your moral state. I cannot therefore analyze it, to show you that it is illusory, that it emanates from the yetzer hara*. Indeed, even if it were real, it could not be considered real, since it provokes giving up and discouragement. It is therefore only a stratagem of the yetzer hara*, which my father-in-law, the Rebbe, calls "the little clever one." Indeed, it knows perfectly well how to find the words capable of convincing each person.
I must here formulate a general remark on what is the subject of our discussion. Basing myself on the saying of the Baal Shem Tov, which my father-in-law, the Rebbe, cited many times — that what one sees and hears delivers a teaching for the service of Hashem — I would like to analyze your situation more precisely.
You no doubt know that the quality of a painter consists in obscuring the external aspect of an object, in forgetting its outline, in order to penetrate it, to grasp its inner aspect and its essence, in order to express it through his canvas. Thus, the one who contemplates it will perceive what he had not noticed before, when the inner part was hidden by accessory elements.
It is in this way that a painter reveals the essence of what he represents. Subsequently, the one who sees his canvas observes a different reality, more true, and becomes aware that he was previously in error.
All that has just been said constitutes a fundamental principle of the service of the Creator.
The Torah in general and Chassidus* in particular teach us that the entirety of creation was carried out by the Word of Hashem, and that this vivifies and perpetuates it at every moment. But the contraction of the Divine Light and the attribute of Heavenly severity veil and conceal this Word of Hashem, leaving only its most superficial part to appear.
Avodas Hashem*, based on the pure faith that "there is no other besides Him," consists in considering each event of life in accordance with this principle. Each person, to the full measure of his means, must bring out the Divinity that is in everything and reduce, as much as possible, the veil imposed on its inner dimension by its superficial aspect.
It is the same for each one in particular, for "you are children to Hashem." The second chapter of the Tanya explains in this regard that a son is an emanation of his father's brain, and that in the same way the soul of each Jew comes from the Thought and Wisdom of Hashem, which are indeed an integral part of Him Himself. Such is therefore the inner essence of every Jew, including yours.
But Hashem does not wish that the soul should have recourse to "the bread of shame." He therefore grants it the power to make an effort. Even more, it is not a question of a simple effort, but indeed of what must absorb it, morally and physically, and allow it to receive all good, to reveal the highest stages, while indeed meriting it.
In the Tanya, the Rebbe also clarifies another point. He explains that one must not think that what has just been said does not apply to certain persons. He affirms that this is impossible, and emphasizes that even if the effort is not for the sake of Hashem, it will become so in the end, for "none of us shall be cast away," as the Tanya explains at the end of chapter 39.
One must therefore guard against letting the external aspects obscure what is the essential goal of man and the purpose of his creation.
When a person experiences difficulties, when he is confronted with trials, when he must transform the matter of the world, he must conclude that there is no other means to attain the desired goal — that is, that the soul remain what it already was before its creation, that it preserve its purity, even more, that it receive a considerable elevation.
Indeed, "one moment of teshuvah* and good deeds in this world is preferable to all of the world to come." Consequently, the difficulties one may experience in overcoming the trials, or even the discouragement inspired by failure from time to time, cannot alter the joy one feels at being "My firstborn son, Israel," the promise that one receives from Hashem Himself, that "Your entire people are tzaddikim*."
If one takes these elements into account, one can ask how a Jew — especially if he has benefited from the light of Chassidus*, even more if he has studied it, and how much more so if Hashem has sent him sufferings — can write that he is discouraged, chas v'shalom*, that he does not find his place? Such a position offends not only faith, but even logic!
In the strongest manner, Hashem gives the assurance that "none of us shall be cast away." He does not ask of man what is not within his ability, for "the Holy One, blessed be He, does not act with deceit toward His creatures." He only expects man to make use of the strengths at his disposal. Even more, He clarifies that His request is only this: "Open for Me an opening the size of the point of a needle, and I will Myself open for you the gate of the Sanctuary."
Such are the words of Hashem. How can one claim that one must reason otherwise, chas v'shalom*, that one must be discouraged, lower one's arms, convince oneself that the fall continues?
The question is therefore the following. Between the words of the Master and those of the disciple, which must one choose? You must ask yourself this question. You have one conception, and Hashem has another. Do you have any doubt in determining who is right?
We will stop this reasoning here.
In practical terms, you must know that you belong to the community of chassidim*, that you are therefore attached to the Tree of Life, that the definition of this bond is expressed by the verse: "You are attached to Hashem, all of you alive today." The Rebbe cites in this regard, in the kuntres* of 2 Nissan, the statement of our Sages that "when all are dead, you will still be alive. Just as you are all alive today, so will you be in the world to come."
In other words, you have received a personal promise, formulated by our Sages, that "you are all alive today" and "you will all be alive in the world to come."
You must therefore fill your time with Torah and mitzvos* permeated with yiras Shamayim*, make use of the gifts that Hashem has granted you to strengthen this yiras Shamayim*.
Such things must not be put off until tomorrow, when it will be necessary to accomplish the task assigned to tomorrow. Today, you will therefore dedicate yourself to that of this day. To carry all this through to a good end, one must know that all the obstacles emanate from the yetzer hara*, that emunah* must permeate the intellect and the feeling, the concrete action, the thought, the speech and the action.
When you devote yourself to all this, even if it seems to you impossible to accomplish more than the point of a needle, Hashem will grant you success and He will open for you the gate of the Sanctuary.
I hope that you will not hold against me the delay with which my response reaches you, that you will soon announce to me a joyful piece of news and tell me that you are acting in the spirit of what has just been developed.
With my blessing and awaiting your good news, which you will give me very soon,
