Igrot Kodesh · Letter 959 — Chassidus & Avodas Hashem
Volume 4 · Letter 195
With the help of Hashem,
It is a well-known saying of the Baal HaHillula* (the Previous Rebbe) about his students, that their task is to be "lamps to illuminate."
The words of tzaddikim* in general, and particularly the words of the Nesi'im* of Israel concerning their students and those bound to them, are exact, and also in their details. So it is also with the title "lamps to illuminate" — he is teaching the path to those bound to him in several fundamental matters.
Some of them:
Several qualities in an illuminating lamp: the lamp itself is a source of light — a luminary, even if in miniature form.
The lamp is composed of oil and wick — and the matters of the analogy are: oil — Torah[1] and mitzvos; wick — the person, meaning[2] the body, or more precisely a part of his soul, the nefesh* which is the partner[3] of the body, and more inwardly — the divine soul* garbed in the animal soul.[4]
When one kindles the wick, and it and the oil unite one with the other, the lamp shines with many[5] luminaries.
And in general these are[6] two types of light: dark light (nehora ukma) and white light (nehora chivra) — elevation and drawing down.
An additional advantage in the light of the lamp is that it specifically is fit for checking and searching in hidden places, in crevices and cracks[7] — it searches all the inner chambers of the belly.
All these matters in the analog are understood and sufficiently explained.
And [regarding] deed-above (asiyah l'eila) — by fulfilling all the above according to the directives of the Baal HaHillula, the lamp illuminates the part of the world pertaining to him, and all the more so his animal soul and divine soul — which is the purpose of the descent of the soul into this world, and upon this depends the purpose of the days of Moshiach* and the Resurrection of the Dead,[8] which shall be speedily in our days, amen.

ב"ה,
