Igrot Kodesh · Letter 99 — Sourcing Rabbinic Citations in Chassidic Texts

I follow up on the "readers' mail" section of the Menachem Av issue of Hakriah VeHakedushah:

To Chaim Dov Ber P.:

We responded to him in the Menachem Av issue of Hakriah VeHakedushah, regarding the statement of our Sages according to which "it was with difficulty that they permitted studying Torah on Shabbat," which is cited in the Torah Or* and the Likkutei Torah. He wanted to know if it is also mentioned in earlier writings.

To answer such questions, one must recall the following phrase of our Sages: "Be cautious, so that you are not burned by the coal" of the Sages.

Indeed, one can fully rely on the words of the Alter Rebbe and his son, the Mitteler Rebbe*. When they mention a saying of our Sages, one can be certain that they actually said it.

But we must view the readers with benevolence and be convinced that they have no doubt on this matter. This person merely wished to know the reference of this saying of our Sages, which is indeed a traditional approach.

We will therefore respond to him that this saying appears in the conclusion of the Sefer HaYirah*, of Rabbeinu Yonah of Gerondi. It is not mentioned in the Midrashim at our disposal, but it is known that many Midrashim that the early Sages possessed have been lost and have not reached us.

To Rav Y. Y. H.:

The same question is posed regarding the following saying of our Sages: "I will dwell among them: It does not say 'in the Sanctuary' but 'among them,' that is to say, within each Jew," cited in the discourses of the Rebbe Shlita.

The remark made regarding the previous answer applies in this case as well.

This citation appears many times in Chassidic texts, as well as in the Reishit Chochmah*, in the Shnei Luchot HaBrit*, and in many other books.

It is quite evident that the expression "our Sages say" applies equally to those of the post-Talmudic and Midrashic period.

על המענה שלנו בהקוה"ק מנ"א שארז"ל "בקושי התירו לדבר ד"ת בשבת" מובא בהוספות לתו"א ולקו"ת - רוצים לדעת אם נמצא ג"כ בספרים שקודם להם.

הנה על שאלות כגון אלו יש להביא מרז"ל והוי זהיר בגחלתן (של חכמים) שלא תכוה

כי כדאי אדמו"ר הזקן ובנו אדמו"ר האמצעי לסמוך עליהם, כשהם מביאים מרז"ל שבודאי אמרוהו רז"ל, אף שאין אנו יודעים מקום המאמר לעת עתה.

אבל כיון שדנין אנו את השואלים לכף זכות שאין מפקפק כלל וכלל בהנ"ל, ורק שרוצה לברר מקור המאמר, וע"ד המורגל "מנא הני מילי דאמרי רבנן כו' אמר קרא כו'"

הננו להורות בזה כי מובא מרז"ל זה בס' היראה לרבינו יונה מגירונדי - קרוב לסופו. במדרשים שתחת ידינו לא נמצא המאמר, אבל ידוע שכמה מדרשים שהיו לעיני הראשונים נאבדו ואינם אצלנו.

מאמר זה מובא כמה פעמים בדא"ח. ונמצא ג"כ בראשית חכמה ש' האהבה פ"ו, של"ה שער האותיות אות למ"ד ועוד ועוד.

ופשוט אשר המובא בספרים בל' "אמרו רז"ל" יכול לכוון לרבותינו שאחרי תקופת הש"ס והמדרשים, ואינו מוכרח שיהי' דוקא בתלמוד או במדרש.
